The lack of rootedness is probably compounded by a people wise enough to not believe the propaganda. A quick poll of some NTU alumni should show that the official rewriting of history did not go far enough to be much use.
Look at the top right hand corner of the NUS logo for a reminder of the truth. http://www.nus.edu.sg/identity/intro/evolution.htm There lies emtombed the much paraded "Nanyang spirit". An era has passed and basic decency would demand that the dead be allowed to RIP!
